The Basics: Planning for Formative Research for Infants and Young Child Feeding Practices

This guidance document provides an orientation for programme planners to infant and young child feeding topics, primary formative research methods, how to determine which method to utilize based on program needs and how to analyze data collected during formative research. It also includes examples of formative research data collection tools, data collection plans, and analysis tools. Guidance is provided on conducting background literature reviews at the country level and examples of how this data can inform research questions. For formative research involving data collection, guidance is provided on choosing sample participants and how this should match to a research question. Descriptions of research methods and their use, as well as links to existing resource materials for these methods, and how to match a research question with appropriate methods (and missteps to avoid in this) are provided. Tips for synthesizing findings from formative research are also presented.
